An early Christmas present from The Honda Foundation has helped ensure community organisation Self-Help for Hard of Hearing People (SHHH), can educate hearing-impaired people in NSW on devices available for watching television.
The Honda Foundation and Hornsby Honda provided $3,500 to purchase two digital television sets for training purposes. Pauline Reidy, Office Manager for SHHH Australia is delighted with the donation. “The grant has been used to upgrade our training facility with necessary digital television equipment,” she said.
SHHH Australia Inc. is a voluntary, non-profit educational organisation dedicated to helping hearing-impaired Australians whose primary method of communication is speech. The charity was founded in 1983 by Mary Sparke, herself hearing impaired, who strongly believed that hearing impaired people needed more than lip reading and hearing aids.
SHHH has grown substantially since its inception, and now gives information and advice to hearing impaired people and their families, as well as promoting community understanding about hearing loss.
Recognising that knowledge is essential for discerning consumers, SHHH assists hearing impaired individuals to make informed decisions about the best alternatives for their personal hearing management.
Tom Ritchie, Marketing Manager at Hornsby Honda, believes strongly in the work SHHH carries out in the community. “We understand that people with hearing impairment have access to many devices that allow them to take advantage of the things that hearing people take for granted. We are delighted that the money from this grant will help better the quality of life for people with hearing impairment by providing training in what devices are available for watching television and how to use them.
“Over the past 16 years, The Honda Foundation has distributed over $7.5 million in grants to a wide variety of worthy causes including health organisations, Guide Dogs, homeless charities, hospitals and medical research bodies. As a large contributor to The Honda Foundation, Hornsby Honda is very proud to be associated with this very worthwhile cause,” Mr. Ritchie said.
